*Before getting started...*
When building your turtle / tortoise enclosures (esp. indoor habitats) avoid Pine, Cedar and Fir. Be sure that the woods are free of toxins.
Pressure or weather treated wood contains formaldehyde- avoid all Wolmanized lumber.
Any hard wood (oak) is best for your inside tort enclosure/table and use two or three coats of a water base polyurethane.
Railroad ties leach oils that are hazardous.  Paints and lacquer fumes also pose a danger. Be sure that they are dried out at least twice long as the manufacturers recommendations- if not longer.
